A Sign of the Harvest to Come!

The first autumn rain fell gently and sparingly in our region on Saturday afternoon. A soft “caress” to awaken the olive trees. Little by little, as temperatures begin to fall and the rains return, the trees will speed up the ripening of their fruit. Harvest time is drawing near!

Most of the project’s olive groves bear no fruit this year. They “gave” generously last year and needed the season that followed to recover from the stress of bearing their crop. This year, however, the trees in the small and large Voulgaraki groves are laden with olives.

The groves are in very good condition. Don’t be fooled by the tall, dry grass! Walk through it in the morning and your feet get wet from the moisture of the night’s dew. The grass has helped the trees withstand the long, hot summer by retaining moisture and shielding the upper root system from the sun’s radiation. Now, as it decomposes, it will return its nutrients to the soil.

Healthy, firm fruit

The fruit is in just as good a condition as the trees themselves. “Healthy fruit on a healthy tree,” one might say. Smooth, firm and healthy, it is waiting for the rains to swell.

There can be no doubt – all of Nature bears witness to it – the time is coming!
