The „Aegis of Tragos“ indicates that the producer is under the protection of TRAGOS. i.e. that TRAGOS has assumed the production risk. The producer receives a fair compensation for his costs, work and profit regardless of the quantity that will be produced eventually.
By assuming the production risk, we grant to the producer the possibility to cultivate with the outmost respect for nature and natural resources and to pursue quality without compromise. The “Aegis” renders possible the continuation of the culture even following years of total crop-failure (as such was year 2022 – 2023) and the realization of measures, such as groundworks or mulching, for the mitigation of the effects of the climate change.
From a historical and mythological perspective it is only is natural for a TRAGOS [Greek for Billy-Goat] to take under his „Aegis“, what he considers worth protecting. “Aegis” initially meant “goat fur” [from Ancient Greek „αίξ“ (goat). For centuries goat furs were used in the construction of war shields and ended up being their synonym. Zeus, the great God, held one such “aegis” produced of the fur of the goat Amaltheia by Hephaistos.
Currently the olive oil “TRAGOS” is produced under the “Aegis of Tragos”. However, it is our goal to bring more producers under our protection so that sustainable agriculture may “gain ground” in our region!
