The Hail

Engaging in agriculture means accepting our human frailty in the face of Nature.

On June 17th, we described ourselves as “cautiously optimistic” about the state of the project’s olive groves. But on June 21st, thirteen minutes of hail were enough to wipe out maybe as much as half the fruit.

It’s hard not to feel a sense of futility and helplessness. And yet, the olive tree — with its eternal cycle — will bring us back into its flow. It will remind us that sometimes, a little is enough.

The precious fruit on the ground…

Our summer photo contest has begun!

Those were the bad news. The good news? Our summer photo contest has officially begun!

This year, we’ve decided to honor the hen — this wonderful, funny, humble creature that has been saving lives for thousands of years: through its meat, yes, but even more through its “fruit”— the egg.

But the hen is more than that: it protects the vegetable garden from pests, keeps the yard clear of snakes and scorpions, and enriches the soil with its precious manure.

So, here’s to the “Ode to the Hen”! Have fun taking part!
And tell your friends too!
