Welcome spring!

Spring in the groves!

The spring that begins today finds most of the olive groves in excellent condition!

The past winter wasn’t “great,” but it was much better than those of previous years. The trees have received the cold and water they need, and benefitting from Elton’s good care, especially the autumn pruning and fertilization with goat manure, they are sprouting well and already budding (and very satisfactorily too)!

Now, it is important for the weather to stay “mild,” without early heatwaves and other sudden changes, which could damage the buds and, very soon, the flowers.

Dynamic adolescents!

Our young – old olive grove, the one that emerged from the burned olive trees in the Bogdani area (see our entry from 14.2.2024), is full of strength and vitality! The only thing our wild olive trees need now is the removal of the suckers, although due to their very strong root system, their growth is not significantly hindered even by these.

Although the general condition is good, we are facing some problems as spilocaea oleaginea has befallen Voulgaraki, and, unfortunately, quite extensively! Spilocaea oleaginea is a fungus that kills the leaves, thus weakening the tree.

Unfortunately, nothing can be done for the affected leaves, which will be lost. Any care will focus on the healthy leaves that remain and the ones that will emerge. For this reason, Elton plans to act quickly, so the trees still have time to benefit from the growth period, which will end once the weather warms up.

Under these conditions, it is unlikely that there will be any fruiting in Voulgaraki this year. Weather permitting, the goal is for these olive groves to be in good condition when the new olive cycle begins, in the winter of 2025/2026.
