The olive fly, a species of true fly, lays its eggs in the flesh of the olive. Once they hatch, the emerging larvae begin feeding on the pulp, carving tunnels through the fruit. The wounds and galleries created by the fly allow microbial spoilage to set in, ultimately degrading the quality of the olives.<\/p><p>The appearance and development of the olive fly are strongly influenced by weather conditions, especially temperature and humidity. The high temperatures and frequent rainfall of recent weeks have boosted fly populations in many regions of our country, leading to the expectation that this year\u2019s production of extra virgin olive oil will be relatively limited.<\/p><p>All of the above confirms our long-held insistence on early harvesting! Fortunately, with the help of the friends who joined this year\u2019s \u201cHarvest Days,\u201d the project\u2019s olive groves were picked in time, before the fly appeared and before the fruit became attractive to it. Chief among them are predatory insects and birds. Unfortunately, the populations of the former are harmed by pesticide use, while the latter are also affected by hunting. The absence of the olive fly\u2019s natural enemies is \u201ccompensated for\u201d widely through the use of pesticides, which, however, also harm those very natural enemies. As a result, agriculture becomes increasingly dependent on chemical treatments.<\/p><p>We are happy (and proud) that in our project\u2019s olive groves insects can buzz around undisturbed, and we hope the birds can also find refuge and peace there.
